The House
When you house hunt you see all kinds of properties. Some are ready to be moved in to, others need a little TLC first. This particular house, which dates back to the early ‘80’s, needed a lot of work, but the new owners knew it had the potential to become their dream home. Having been let down by color choices before, they wanted to get it right from the get-go and hired me to make a color scheme for the new house.
The Family
I am friends with this family of four. Diana is from Venezuela but has been living in the Netherlands for many years now, with her Dutch husband, Floris. She loves it here, but of course she also has wonderful memories of Venezuela.
The Inspiration
To bring a little bit of Venezuela to the Netherlands, Diana brought over quite a collection of art that is typical for where she comes from. They are colorful pieces and the perfect source of inspiration for me.
Mérida Hermosa
We gave the color scheme the name Mérida hermosa, which means beautiful Mérida. Mérida is a city, located at an altitude of around 1,500 meters in the northern Andes. Below is a painting of it by Héctor Vazquez.
Applying the Color Scheme
The floor downstairs is a warm-colored ‘wood-tile’, laid over floor heating. We combined it with soft colors on the walls, arranged in such a way that it played with certain features in the architecture. Upstairs, we went for a lighter laminate combined with stronger colors on the walls and curtains. The bathrooms colors bring back memories of a very special holiday at the beaches of Venezuela. It does not tire, because it comes from a place of love.

The bedrooms have a more outspoken color scheme. Standing on the landing, looking into the rooms, you will see that each room has its own (personal) color combination. Yet there is still cohesion achieved by using the same color strengths and applying them in a consistent manner in each room.
The walls facing the windows have been painted white, so as to reflect and enhance the sunlight shining in.
